The Ledger Series: Sandalwood

Mystical Mysore Sandalwood

Experience the Ledger Series, featuring nine historically significant Floris fragrances, spanning the brand’s nearly 300-year history. This collection features our finest Eaux De Parfum, available exclusively online and in-store at Floris London. Crafted in small batches for a truly unique olfactory journey.

Introduced into the Floris collection in 1870, Sandalwood stands as a definitive Floris icon. This fragrance has always been particularly popular due to its exotic associations with India and its deep, smooth, woody character. Inspired by the mystical allure of the sacred sandalwood forests of Mysore, India, Sandalwood captures the rich and creamy essence of this revered wood.

Crafted with the finest sandalwood oil sourced from Mysore, our Sandalwood fragrance is enriched with a captivating blend of bergamot, rose, cardamom, and black pepper in the top notes, creating a harmonious and intriguing opening. As the scent develops, Sandalwood Eau de Parfum reveals an enchanting heart of orris and star anise, infusing the fragrance with a mesmerizing blend of floral elegance and subtle spice. Finally, the smooth sandalwood scent is deepened by warm musks and the earthy allure of patchouli in the base notes, creating a creamy and woody finish.

The botanic name Santalum is most likely derived from the Sanskrit word candráh meaning shining, white, as it describes the light colour of the wood. The source of this magnetic scent is a towering tree that can grow to a height of ten metres, it is evergreen with red flowers dotting its canopy. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and, unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades. Often cited as one of the most expensive woods in the world. Floris’s Sandalwood Ledger seeks to capture the spirit of this highly revered wood.

A Journey to the South Pole

An adventure across seas and land, blistering heat to the freezing cold. British adventurer, pioneering polar explorer and writer Sir Ranulph Fiennes took the daring journey to the South Pole, now known as the Transglobal Expedition. Fiennes led the expedition team, joined by fellow Britons Charles Burton and Oliver Shepard, and supported by a crew of approximately three dozen individuals. Their journey commenced from Greenwich, England, in September 1979, with the goal of closely following the Greenwich meridian during their southward trek.

The expedition culminated in their arrival at the coast of Antarctica in January 1980, where they stayed until October. Fiennes, Burton, and Shepard embarked on snowmobiles towards the South Pole, reaching their destination journey to the south pole on December 15. Following a brief stay at the American base, they resumed their journey, arriving at the Scott Base on the west coast of Antarctica in mid-January 1981. Remarkably, the team completed the continental traverse in a record-setting 67 days, showcasing the extraordinary achievement of the Transglobal Expedition.

Over the subsequent months, they engaged in a series of sea voyages northward. In July, Fiennes, and Burton, navigated through the Northwest Passage in an open boat, eventually reaching Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. Continuing their journey by foot in September, they made their way to the settlement of Alert on the island’s north shore after wintering there for five months. Undeterred by the challenges, the pair set forth for the North Pole in mid-February 1982, completing an arduous trek using snowmobiles and sledges to reach their destination on April 11. The return journey proved equally formidable, marked by difficult ice conditions, and stretches of open water.

Spending over three months on a drifting floe, they were eventually retrieved by the Benjamin Bowring, which sailed them back to Britain. The entire expedition concluded in August, a remarkable three years after their departure, covering a staggering distance of approximately 52,000 miles upon their return to Greenwich. Throughout their journey, Floris provided the expedition with a range of products, among them our now adventurous Sandalwood Eau de Parfum, pictured at the Borga basecamp with Charles and Burton.
